About this calculation

Convert kilowatts (kW) to watts (W) while preserving the underlying power quantity. The calculator updates when the input changes and shows the conversion rule and a worked example.

Formula

W = kW × 1000

Worked example

With Kilowatts: 1 kW, watts is 1,000 W.

How to convert kilowatts to watts

Enter a value in kilowatts. Multiply it by the factor in the displayed formula to express the same quantity in watts. To reverse the relationship, divide by the same nonzero factor.

W = kW × 1000. As a reference point, 10 kW equals 10,000 W with this conversion. This is an example, not a recommended level or target.

What the unit relationship means

Kilowatts and watts measure power: the rate at which energy is transferred or work is done. A larger rating can mean more work in the same time under comparable conditions, but a converted rating is still the same power. To estimate energy use, combine power with operating time and use an energy unit such as watt-hours. A kW-to-W result should never be mistaken for a total electricity bill or energy consumption by itself.

Check the direction of the result

As a scale check, one kW corresponds to 1,000 W. Doubling the input from 10 kW to 20 kW changes the calculated output from 10,000 W to 20,000 W. Ordinary factor conversions are proportional: zero maps to zero and doubling the input doubles the result. If a copied value does not follow this pattern, check the source unit, decimal point, and formula direction.

When this conversion is useful

Compare equipment or motor power ratings expressed in kilowatts and watts. Power describes the rate at which energy is transferred.

What to check

Watts and kilowatts measure power, while watt-hours and kilowatt-hours measure energy over time. A rating in watts is not an energy-consumption total. In this direction the entered kilowatts is reported as watts; check both unit symbols when copying a figure from another source, because the reverse direction answers a different question.

Precision and reporting

A rated power is often a nominal or maximum operating figure. Converting it accurately does not guarantee that equipment draws or delivers that power continuously. For comparisons, use consistent rating conditions and round the final result to reflect the source specification. For a separate reporting example, 7.3 kW produces 7,300 W. If 7.3 kW was an approximate reading, the converted digits should not be treated as a more accurate measurement.

Common questions
