About this calculation

Square Diagonal: find diagonal from side length. Rectangular area covers a surface, perimeter measures the outline, and diagonal measures corner-to-corner distance. Each requires different dimensions.

Formula

d = side × √2

Worked example

With Side length: 5 units, diagonal is 7.071068 units.

Calculation method

The rule is d = side × √2.

For this square diagonal example, changing side length from 5 units to 6 units while keeping the other inputs fixed changes diagonal from 7.071068 units to 8.485281 units.

Reading diagonal

Area uses square units; perimeter and diagonal use linear units. A square is the special case where the two side lengths match. The corner-to-corner diagonal crosses two equal perpendicular sides and is side length times the square root of two. In the worked values on this page, side length 5 units produce diagonal 7.071068 units.

Practical use

Use these measurements for rooms, screens, fields, packaging, and material estimates. Use diagonal length to check whether a rigid item fits across a square opening.

Limits and common mistakes

Convert all input lengths into the same unit before applying a formula. A rectangle can have the same area as another rectangle but a different perimeter. The diagonal must exceed one side and be shorter than two sides laid end to end.

Why the relationship works

A square has four equal sides and four right angles, so one side fixes its perimeter, area, and diagonal. Perimeter adds boundary lengths; area multiplies perpendicular sides; diagonal uses a right triangle across the interior. Recovering a side from area calls for a square root, while recovering it from perimeter calls for division by four. The square diagonal rule uses side length (units) in d = side × √2; read each symbol as the field named on this page.

Interpreting another set of values

For square diagonal, the fields labeled side length (units) are the known quantities. The calculator solves for diagonal in units using d = side × √2. Decide whether the task concerns the boundary, the covered surface, one recovered side, or a corner-to-corner distance. The same shape can need a different calculation for each purpose. When comparing two calculations, keep their units and input definitions identical.

For a second square diagonal check, keep the other default inputs fixed and change side length from 5 units to 7 units. Diagonal changes from 7.071068 units to 9.899495 units. This is a comparison of two particular cases. Repeat it near the values relevant to your task; do not assume that every formula changes at a constant rate.

Checks and limits

Use one length unit for all dimensions. Area is measured in square units; perimeter, sides, and diagonal use linear units. A rectangle’s diagonal must be longer than either individual side, and a square’s perimeter must be four times its side. These relationships provide quick reasonableness checks. The reported diagonal is 7.071068 units in the worked example. Keep its stated unit or counting convention when checking it against another calculation.
